This is the guy that put Clinton on his recent, and successful, diet. He doesn't advocate C, but the evidence shows his program works. All plant based is naturally high in C and other nutrients needed for heart health, and low in the damaging items.

I love it
To fully grasp how so many smart, right-minded people could get it so wrong, it might help to start with a quick review of medical history.

Yes, it would be interesting to know what, if any supplements are also recommended.

a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects.

Oil free? What about the benefit of fish oils, omega's, Olive, etc? (I watched a trailer with this doctor and he stated, "no Olive oil")

I have a friend who is a strict vegan and he is overweight. I have no idea what his lab values are, but being vegan does not restructure genetic dispositions. Vegans can still have high cholesterol irregardless of what they eat.

They interview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoHt9cSW ... _embedded#!

*Inn the above interview, Dean Ornish recommends fish oil, Dr. E does not.

I bet Billy boy is on a statin.

I think he has his finger on a gun but is missing the trigger..........

Yes it does, through epigenetics:

Nutrients can effect gene expression in multiple
ways and even define the end points of that expression.12 Nutritional
guidelines have been a mainstay of the management of dyslipidaemia, a
risk factor for coronary heart disease, yet there is a great variation in the
response of plasma lipids to dietary modification. New research suggests
that this is in part due to each person’s genotype. Intuitively most have
suspected that it is both the genotype and the environment that interact
together to move the expression of disease in a particular way. The
study of the polymorphic nature of each person’s genetic makeup and
the particular responses to vital nutrients will become essential as it
becomes more and more necessary to individualise prescriptions for
lifestyle changes.13 Diet can influence gene function through a direct
effect on gene expression, transcription, translation, post translational
influence on gene products, epigenetic effects and DNA repair.
Vitamins,
for example, can act as powerful regulators of post-translational gene
expression. These effects may be supportive to health or contribute to
disease. Dietary fat and carbohydrate can regulate expression of the
LDL phenotype. An integrated approach using nutrition, exercise, and
stress management tools is more likely to optimise gene expression
and reduce the risk of chronic cardiovascular disease and the burden
of polypharmacy.

Integrative approach to management of heart disease
Is heart disease reversible?

Since diet can influence gene function through a direct
effect on gene expression, transcription, translation, post translational
influence on gene products, epigenetic effects and DNA repair and my diet is sometimes lacking,
I have used a unique supplement, Longevinex as part of my health insurance now for several years.

Why Longevinex:

1) Longevinex For Healthy Hearts

Ralph, have you read "How to Live 100 Years Without Growing Old" by Bill Sardi (item 3 from your post above)? I find it hard to consider paying $58 for the used paperback or $59 for a new paperback. Does Sardi have a supplement he is marketing in the paperback? He seems to like Longevinex. Does he have a financial interest in marketing this supplement? Where can we find objective information about the supplement?

Initially LEF sold high dose "optimized resveratrol" (I take it now) but now LEF has marketed resveratrol with several other additives such as grape seed extract.

This whole subject is confusing. It's probably because the science is fairly new and double blind human trials can't or won't be performed. Ralph, do you take a life extension supplement? If so, which one?

http://www.heartattackproof.com/moderation_kills.htm

Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr, MD seems to advocate a cholesterol level below 150. He also recommends not to eat any thing with a face i.e meat, fish, chicken or any of the monosaturated fats. In one of his paragraphs,
These patients (1 woman and 23 men) agreed to adopt a plant-based diet with fats making up less than 10% of calories. They ate no oils, fish, meat or dairy products (except skim milk and non-fat cheese and yogurt). The patients also took cholesterol-lowering medication as necessary to maintain their total serum cholesterol below 150 mg/dL.
Blankenhorn test
Their results showed that patients derived the most benefit if lipids are lowered by diet combined with medical therapy, rather than by diet alone or by modest diet changes combined with medication.

My own experience with heart disease patients shows that cholesterol levels can be kept below this threshold with a diet low in lipids and cholesterol-lowering medications as needed. This low-lipid therapy stops coronary disease from progressing and even reverses it

It appears he advocating the use of "medical therapy" (statins) concurrently with the plant diet to lower cholesterol to his recommendations but not really condoning their use until desirable results are needed or met?

I was under the impression that a low cholesterol sub 100 as he recommends in several paragraphs is unhealthy as read on this forum.

He also appears to have conducted a study which legitimizes his claims at 5 years, 12 years and 25 years(1985). If a studs can be done on plant based therapy then it seems to me a study of VC can also be entertained since Paulings work traces back to the 1940's?. Who would underwrite such a test as he claims to have executed, himself?

What I find most disheartening is his diet is not published anywhere I have ventured, Paulings is!! He is selling the sizzle (diet) not the steak. Reminds me of Dr Huggins and his team, they appear to be the only ones who can figure out which order the amalgam fillings should be removed to provide maximum benefit.$$$$$$. :?:

Yes, I have read it and most of his other books published in the last 10 years.

Does he have a financial interest in marketing this supplement? Where can we find objective information about the supplement?

Bill is the managing partner/President of Resveratrol Partners, LLC, and the inventor of Longevinex, just down the street from Tower Labs/ Heart Tech in Las Vegas. Longevinex is the only resveratrol and red wine product that has published both animal and human studies. Bill is also light years ahead of the mainstream with knowledge of how nutrients effect gene expression.
http://www.Longevinex.com and http://www.resveratrolnews.com/ are both full of useful, life saving information.

While it can influence the gene expression, it still in can not correct gene mutations.

Vitamin C in the diet corrects for GULO, right?

In fact, an argument can be made that all vitamin requirements exist because of mutations and that diet must correct for them. I think I once wrote an article about this:
http://www.internetwks.com/owen/gene.html

But correcting the mutation itself... Well Bruce Ames believe that the B vitamins are capable of repairing damage to DNA strands. Detecting and repairing DNA breakdown are one of their functions.

That depends on the type of gene mutation. The December 31, 2010 post here may be instructive:

Yes, I was totally wrong.... food and nutrition seems to be able to fix almost anything - if you can find appropriate set for your disease (which might be very hard or almost impossible). Thats actually the focus of nutrigenomics. Ofc, once certain thresholds are crossed its very hard or impossible to bring health back.

I view all of my supplements as life extension supplements.

I don't use any supplements from Life Extension Foundation and I no longer am a member, for personal and professional reasons.

I use a variety of supplements that include Ascorsine-9, Longevinex, D3 from Bio-Tech Pharmacal, magnesium as Natural Calm and Ultra-Mag, Carlson's Fish Oil, P-5-P, folinic acid as MegaFolinic, methylcobalamin, grapeseed extract, Q-Gel COQ10, IODORAL, L-Se-methylselenocysteine, R-Plus by Geronova, sometimes R-PlusQ, K2 (MK-7), POWERGRAPE, GreenTea-70 from FoodScience, Hyaluronic Joint Complex from Source Naturals and Life Force Multiple No-Iron from Source Naturals, ascorbic acid from Trader Joe or Thompson, TMG and Taurine.

I purchase my supplements now mostly from Swanson, and I use the Swanson label products If I know the raw material supplier. I spent 35 years in the natural products industry, so I buy from companies and people that I know personally, or that are verifiable by former colleagues.
I have used Dr. Rath's products and still recommend Epican Forte.
