Dehydroascorbic Acid for Targeting Antibiotics to Brain

Post Number:#1  Post by OxC » Sun Aug 17, 2014 3:58 pm

A study published just this week discusses targeting of encapsulated antibiotics to the brain by using the oxidized form of vitamin C (dehydroascorbic acid, or DHAA) in the encapsulation process. It appears to take advantage of the affinity of DHAA for GLUT1 transporters that are abundant in the cells of the blood-brain barrier. So here's an interesting application of vitamin C in infectious disease that isn't directly related to an effect of vitamin C on the infectious agent per se, but instead capitalizes on a completely different property of this particular form of vitamin C!
