Info on making own pills from bulk powder

Post Number:#1  Post by ChuckArbogast » Sat Jun 23, 2018 3:06 am

I'm going on vacation soon and take a few of my supplements in powder form since I can take them at home. Since I will be traveling, I am considering making pills from the bulk powder I already have. Since I have no clue as to what to do or what to get, all help is appreciated.

The questions I can think of are:
What is the best quality empty pills?
How do you determine how much can go into each size of empty pill? Is it different for type of supplement?
What is the best device to make the pills with?
Are there any other items that I would need to get to make the pills, other than pills and the device?

I have looked at Amazon.com and there are tons of options, so I figured it would be better to ask the people here about what they might use and if their are any best practices in making your own pills.

I can certainly buy the pills but since I have all of the powder here already, I figured it might be cheaper to make them myself.

Thanks,
Chuck

Guess you're not getting any answer because nobody makes their own, or rather consider it too much of a hassle and just approximately measure bulk-powders with a spoon. As I usually do.

Empty capsules are either gelatine or a vegan kind. Choose what you like.
Easiest to determine how many Mgs go into a capsule is ether with a Mcg scale, or by weighting the powder filled divided through the number of capsules. Each powder has an unique specific weight, and the same capsule sizes will contain different amounts.
Only know the small manual capsule fillers. Which are straightforward for small amounts of capsules filled, like for a vacation. Guess an industrial capsule filler would cost quite a lot. Only need empty capsules, the filler machine, bulk-powders and empty supplement bottles to package them.

Thank you both for your help. I will review the links and see if it makes sense for me to fill my own or not.

There are many different types of capsule filling machines and widely varying price depending upon quality.

Manual, Semi Automatic and Automatic devices with rising prices depending upon construction and quality. There are cheap plastic ones that can fill 20 capsules at a time or better ones which can do 100, 200, 400 capsules at a time manually.

I considered one of the better models CN-100 by a Chinese company which costed around £150 at the time but that would of risen by the time it landed and import duty and sales tax was added. Therefore I went for an inexpensive one which cost me around £18, now £8.59. The plastic molding quality is not perfect but it does work. I have used it a few times without issue. One thing I like about it is that it has a surround which keeps the powder in the capsule filling area and prevents it from spilling out over the worktop etc. I dislike the idea of contamination of the powder which you can see on the demos of some of the capsule filling machines where powder spills all over the workspace and they scrap it back into the powder. Many cheap capsule fillers do not have this feature. I have only seen it in the CN-100 which I originally looked at but the price was too high for what I needed.

I am not sure what 6x100 is referring to unless it means 6 parts/pieces.

They make them in 5,4,3,2,1,0,00,000 sizes in increasing size.
